PRESS RELEASE: Chesterfield Police Seek Assistance Locating Injured Driver – FOUND

UPDATE: The driver has been FOUND – thank you for your assistance

On Monday evening at approximately 11:06PM, Chesterfield Township Police responded to a 911 call from a motorist traveling on I-94 who reported a vehicle on fire in a field near 25 Mile Road and New Haven Road.

Upon arrival, officers located a crashed SUV that was fully engulfed in flames. During their investigation, officers discovered a blood trail leading northeast from the vehicle, indicating the driver may have left the crash scene on foot.

The Chesterfield Township Police Department was assisted by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit and drone operators in conducting an extensive search of the surrounding area.

The Chesterfield Fire Department extinguished the vehicle fire and assisted with the search using off road utility vehicles.

Investigators have learned that the driver reportedly made suicidal statements earlier in the day. Evidence at the scene suggests the driver sustained significant injuries in the crash, raising serious concerns for his safety and well-being.

At this time, the driver has not been located, and the investigation remains ongoing. We believe the driver is Nicholas Popp 32 years old from Chesterfield.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of the driver is urged to contact the Chesterfield Township Police Department immediately at 586-949-2322
